If you have a tooth with severe nerve infection or damage, such as a periapical abscess, a root canal is recommended to eliminate the bacteria and relieve pain.

You might need endodontic treatment if your tooth has a

  • Large cavity
  • Deep crack
  • Abscess near the tip of the root
  • History of traumatic injury

Endodontic treatment is typically the last option available to preserve damaged, dying or severely infected teeth before removing them altogether.

What to Expect

This type of endodontic treatment is typically staged across 2-4 visits, depending on the complexity of the tooth and extent of infection. Typically, Dr Chen will spend the first appointment removing the nerve of the tooth to relieve any pain you may be experiencing. The second stage is to clean out the canals and medicate them to ensure that the third and final stage, sealing off the canals, prevents any recurring infections.

Dr Chen will use local anaesthetic to completely numb the tooth, so that you won’t feel anything more than a bit of pressure.

After Your Procedure

Most root canal-treated teeth require a crown to protect them after the endodontic procedure is complete. Since these teeth no longer have a nerve supply, they tend to be a bit more brittle than their neighbours. A crown will protect the tooth against chipping or premature wear caused by everyday biting and chewing.
